Set Up

Set up a routine that feels right for your family.  Allow for some flexibility when the occasion calls for it. You can make your preschool-at-home look and flow however you want! This is one of the best homeschool advantages.  On the weekly lesson plan, you choose some or all of the activities.  It entirely depends on your goals for your child.  Most homeschool preschool moms suggest an hour or less for lessons.  For me and my child, we need more.

The key: Watch for your child's cues and follow them.
Plan for the more focused work to be at top of your list.  Most of us, including children, do their best first thing in the morning.  Fed and rested?  Yep, time for math. ๐Ÿง  Alternate those quiet, sit-down activities with the loud, wiggle activities.  Don’t forget the music and transitional tricks!
Tip:  Between activities tell Alexa to play
The Clean-Up Song by the Kiboomers!
(More on transitional tricks to come.)
Create your child’s work space whether that be at your kitchen table, desk, a room, etc.   You may want a child friendly calendar that includes the days of the week, letter of the week, shape of the week, color of the week, site words…depending on the age and stage of your child.  Pinterest is this mama’s best friend!  Here is my favorite tip about developing a learning space and calendar.

Calendar Wall Idea.  This one is too advanced but has the feel for what my home will do.

Familiarize yourself with the curriculum and be prepared. This is the hardest yet, most essential part. Knowing your plan ahead of time not only makes for a smooth routine but creates an environment for better child behaviors.  Preschoolers, as you well know, have small attention spans. ๐Ÿถ  If they are made to wait too long while you prepare activities on the fly, all heck can break loose! ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Collect your supplies.
I will start with the less obvious choices.

Storage bins – Not actually used for storage but for those fun & messy sensory activities!
Storage cart – Let’s face it.  Staying organized is a win/win for everyone in the home.  I love this cart because it has different sized drawers and a working top surface.
 • File FoldersBinders, and Crate (unless you prefer a filing cabinet and hanging files) – Good for having items stored and prepared in advance, storing materials you want to use again, and saving milestone projects from your child.
•Office Supplies for your prep work –  PrinterLaminatorPaper TrimmerSheet Protectors, and Cardstock.  Yes, I use these every day for materials I know will see tons of use.
